RICE
PAPER
An opportunity arose to create the visual identity for ‘Rice Paper’ a Vietnamese street food eatery based in Barcelona. The company wanted to branch out their business into a high-street chain of eateries that could grow into a global brand. The client wanted bespoke illustrations, which had a strong essence of Vietnamese style and culture in the branding. This needed to work across multiple channels and print material such as packaging, signage and large scale POS displays, which could be used at pop-up stalls in street food markets.
Focusing mainly on the core branding, I began with exploring the style and essence of traditional Vietnamese street food. I began to illustrate and concept key elements that are synonymous with Vietnamese street food such as shrimps, calligraphy, rice paper etc. Combing this illustrative style with water colour and inks I developed the illustrations in Adobe Illustrator and started to create vectors from the illustrations. Once I provided a few concepts and branding variations I began to illustrate these within packaging, signage, large scale vinyl graphics as well as POS.
The final result is a modern and playful brand identity that is truly unique to Rice Paper, which can be easily identified across multiple channels across both print and digital media.

PACKAGING NETS

Keeping the box design simple, I opted to use the shrimp illustration and wording as the main decorative feature on the box and keep colours at a minimum, making the illustration the key visual feature.

Keeping it simple, I stayed with tthe logo on the front and back of the box and the green as a complimentary colour, I wanted to leave some space for any additional text that the client might want to add onto the packaging later.

Combining the shrimp from the first design and the rings from the second design, I tried the idea of imitating the logo at the top of the box without distorting the logo. I also added the Vietnamese phrase for ‘delicious’ as an added nod to the brands heritage.

I wanted to go for an abstract design for the box by adding the rings from the logo. The main logo with the pink was too distracting so a more minimal design I think was the best way forward.
